Selvablue Lodge
by A. Bennett Hennessey
Los Lagos is a releatively new lodge in Bolivia and an
exciting possibilty for birdwatchers. This January 2006, Bennett had the opportunity
to visit the site prospecting the area for bird tourism. We were very pleased.
The lodge is placed in an area that covers a few types of habitats, the key
being Cerrado. In Bolivia, the only protected Cerrado habitat with tourism
facilities was the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park- and the site Los Fierros.
But due to poor management, this area has fallen into a bad state and now only
offers the basics to tourists who would be better off camping and having their
own vehicle. Los Lagos has all the facilities, and boat motors and a truck to
make your visit a great experience. The area covers swampy Beni lowland
habitat, grasslands, dry forest and humid rainforest areas. The area around the
lodge probably has around 400 species of birds, including abundant macaws,
Red-legged Seriema, 6 Cerrado rare specialists, Toco Toucan, and both the
Horned and Southern screamer- yes, both! There are interesting observation
towers in a few sites. The site deserves at least 5 days. Bird Bolivia will be
helping this lodge reach its full birdwatcher potential and we will be writing
more about this site in the following months. Contact Bird Bolivia (birdbolivia@unete.com.bo
) for more information.
